Sublimation vs vinyl for personalised dog products
A side-by-side comparison of sublimation and HTV vinyl for personalised dog products — durability, hand-feel and margin.
Both sublimation and heat-transfer vinyl (HTV) can decorate dog products, but they're not interchangeable.
Also known as: dog leash sleeve, personalized dog leash, custom dog leash, leash cover, lead wrap. Lead Sleeve ships worldwide — UK, US, EU, Canada, Australia, Asia, LATAM.
Durability
- Sublimation: dye bonds into fibres. No layer to crack or peel. Holds up across hundreds of walks and washes.
- HTV: a film sits on top. Will eventually crack, lift or peel — especially in flexed areas like a leash sleeve.
Sublimation wins for daily-use dog gear.
Hand-feel
- Sublimation: none. Feels like the unprinted blank.
- HTV: a noticeable raised layer.
Colour and complexity
- Sublimation: full-colour photo prints, gradients, fine detail — easy.
- HTV: typically one or two solid colours per layer.
Substrate
- Sublimation: polyester only.
- HTV: cotton, blends, polyester.
HTV wins on flexibility, but only matters if your blank isn't polyester. The Lead Sleeve is engineered for sublimation.
Workflow and margin
- Sublimation: print, press, done.
- HTV: print or cut, weed, pre-mask, press. Multiple steps, more waste.
Sublimation is faster per unit and produces less waste — better margin.
When to choose vinyl
- One-off cotton t-shirts.
- Reflective or specialty finishes (glow, metallic) sublimation can't replicate.
For a polyester leash sleeve range, sublimation wins almost every time. See Lead Sleeve vs bandana.
