Team Colours on the Lead: Sports Fan Dog Sleeves Done Right (and Legal)
How fans turn their dog into part of the supporters' end — without falling foul of NFL, NBA, MLB, NCAA or Premier League trademark rules.
Team Colours on the Lead: Sports Fan Dog Sleeves Done Right
Pets are part of the supporters' club. Game day pups. Tailgate dogs. Match-day mascots. The demand for team-themed dog accessories is huge — but most sellers get it badly wrong and end up with takedown notices.
Here's how to do it properly.
The trademark reality
You cannot legally print and resell:
- Team names ("Dallas Cowboys", "Manchester United", "Lakers")
- Official logos, crests, or wordmarks
- Player names or numbers
- Stadium or league imagery
Major leagues (NFL, NBA, MLB, NHL, MLS, Premier League, NCAA) actively police Etsy, Amazon, and independent shops. Listings get pulled. Repeat offenders lose their accounts.
What you absolutely can do
- Team colours, no marks. A red and silver sleeve. A navy and gold sleeve. A black and orange sleeve. The fan recognises it instantly. The lawyers can't touch it.
- City names — generally fine. "Dallas", "Boston", "Liverpool", "Manchester" are geographic, not trademarked.
- Generic supporter language. "Game Day", "Match Day", "Tailgate Pup", "Number One Fan", "Home & Away".
- The owner's surname + a number. Lets the buyer LARP as a player without you printing one.
- Custom orders where the buyer supplies their own approved imagery — the legal liability shifts.
Top fan colour palettes by league
NFL — Cowboys (navy/silver), Chiefs (red/gold), Eagles (midnight green), Steelers (black/yellow), Packers (green/gold) NBA — Lakers (purple/gold), Celtics (green/white), Warriors (blue/yellow), Knicks (orange/blue) MLB — Yankees (navy/white pinstripe), Red Sox (red/navy), Dodgers (Dodger blue) Premier League — Liverpool (red), Man City (sky blue), Arsenal (red/white), Chelsea (royal blue), Spurs (navy/white) NCAA — Crimson Tide, Texas burnt orange, Michigan maize and blue, Notre Dame green and gold
Designing the perfect game-day sleeve
- Use two colours, sharply divided — half-and-half, vertical stripes, or chevron
- Add a white pet name in block sans-serif
- Optional: a single star, lightning bolt, or paw mark in the secondary colour
- Keep the print wraparound so the colours show from every angle
For Etsy sellers
Title your listings "Game Day Dog Leash Sleeve — Personalised, Team Colours of Your Choice" — never name the team. In the description, list "popular colour combinations" by city ("Dallas — navy & silver", "Pittsburgh — black & gold"). Buyers find you. Lawyers leave you alone.
