Is sublimation safe for dog products?
Whether sublimation prints are safe on dog products — what the dye actually is, what happens with chewing or licking, and how Lead Sleeve handles safety.
Short answer: sublimation prints on properly chosen dog products are safe in normal use. Here's the longer answer.
Also known as: dog leash sleeve, personalized dog leash, custom dog leash, leash cover, lead wrap. Lead Sleeve ships worldwide — UK, US, EU, Canada, Australia, Asia, LATAM.
What sublimation actually is
Sublimation uses dye-based ink that, under heat, gases out of the paper and bonds with polyester fibres at a molecular level. Once cured, the dye is inside the fibre, not on top of it. There's no film, no coating, and no surface layer to flake off.
What this means for dogs
- A sublimated leash sleeve doesn't shed any printed material in normal handling.
- A dog that brushes against a sleeve, sniffs it or carries it briefly is not interacting with anything different from the underlying polyester fabric.
- A dog that aggressively chews and ingests fabric is a separate problem — the issue there is fabric ingestion, not the sublimation.
Where to be careful
- Toys. Sublimation isn't typically used on toys designed for chewing. If you see a printed toy that's clearly a chew toy, check the manufacturer's safety data.
- Mouth-contact items. A sublimated bandana that ends up in the dog's mouth occasionally is fine. A sublimated ball that's chewed for hours is not the right product type.
- Lead Sleeves specifically. The sleeve sits on the leash, in the owner's hand. It's not a chewable item. Used as designed, it has no safety implications.
Quality matters
The safety story depends on a properly cured print on a quality polyester substrate. Cheap dye, undercured prints, or non-polyester blends can leach colour with sweat or saliva. Reputable makers using proper inks and properly tested blanks don't have this issue.
In summary
- Sublimation = dye inside the fabric, not on top.
- Properly produced sublimated dog gear is safe in normal use.
- Use the product as intended (a sleeve is for the leash, not for chewing).
- If in doubt, ask the maker about their inks and substrate.
